OpenAI has unveiled AgentKit at Dev Day 2025, a comprehensive toolkit designed to help developers build, deploy, and optimize AI agents with reduced friction. The launch includes Agent Builder, ChatKit, evaluation tools, and connector registry access, alongside new API capabilities for web search and computer automation.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced AgentKit at Dev Day 2025, describing it as "a complete set of building blocks available in the OpenAI platform designed to help you take agents from prototype to production." The toolkit represents OpenAI's strategic push to increase developer adoption by making AI agent development significantly more accessible and efficient.
The announcement comes as the AI industry races to deliver on the promise of autonomous agents—systems that can independently accomplish complex tasks beyond simple response generation. AgentKit aims to bridge the gap between impressive demonstrations and practical, scalable applications that developers and enterprises can actually deploy.
Four Core Components: From Visual Design to Performance Monitoring
AgentKit includes four essential capabilities for agent development. Agent Builder serves as a visual design tool that Altman compared to "Canva for building agents," allowing developers to design logic and workflows through an intuitive interface built on OpenAI's existing Responses API.
ChatKit provides an embeddable chat interface that developers can integrate into their own applications with custom branding and workflows. Evals for Agents introduces comprehensive performance measurement tools, including step-by-step trace grading and automated prompt optimization. Finally, the connector registry enables secure integration with internal tools and third-party systems through an admin control panel.
Enhanced API Capabilities and Real-World Performance
The toolkit leverages OpenAI's new Responses API, which replaces the previous Assistants API and will be sunset in the first half of 2026. Developers gain access to GPT-4o search and GPT-4o mini search models, the same technology powering ChatGPT Search, with impressive accuracy rates of 90% and 88% respectively on factual questions.
The API also includes OpenAI's Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model that powers the Operator product, enabling automated computer tasks like data entry and app workflows. However, OpenAI acknowledges the technology isn't yet "highly reliable" and remains susceptible to inadvertent mistakes, positioning these as early iterations with ongoing improvements planned.
Live Demonstration and Market Implications
To showcase AgentKit's accessibility, OpenAI engineer Christina Huang built an entire AI workflow and two AI agents live on stage in under eight minutes during Dev Day. This demonstration highlighted the toolkit's promise to make agent development more approachable for developers of varying skill levels.
The launch reflects broader industry momentum around AI agents, though previous attempts have often fallen short of expectations. OpenAI's approach focuses on providing robust, tested components rather than overpromising capabilities, potentially setting a more realistic foundation for agent adoption across enterprises and individual developers.
